Chapter 13

Maddie

My phone beeped from the bedside table and I cracked my eyes open. I lifted my arm to turn the phone off but I hit the table with my elbow.

“Shit on a brick that hurt!” I cradled my arm and looked down at the spectacular bruise that decorated my skin.

“You ’kay?” A heavy arm tightened around my midsection and despite my throbbing arm I felt all light and gooey inside.

“Yeah, I’m okay. Hit that stupid bruise.” I wiggled a little so I could reach the phone without dislodging his hold on me.

“’Tupid table,” he grunted. I had a bruise on my left arm that covered my elbow and ran down to my wrist. Jake had received a giant bruise that trailed from his shoulder down to one butt cheek.

There would be a lot of ibuprofen in our future.

Picking up my phone I swiped the screen open, barely registering that it didn’t have its normal password lock in place.
